The Minister of Defence of Georgia hosted the Special Representative of NATO Secretary General for South Caucasus and Central Asia, James Appathurai. At the meeting, Minister Juansher Burchuladze thanked James Appathurai for his unwavering support for Georgia`s sovereignty and territorial integrity and for its Euro-Atlantic integration aspirations. Minister emphasized James Appathurai`s close and effective cooperation with the Georgian Ministry of Defence and his significant contribution in terms of increasing interoperability with NATO.
At the meeting held at the MoD, the sides discussed key issues such as practical cooperation bewteen NATO-Georgia and future prospects of partenrship, successful implementation of the Substantial NATO-Georgia Package (SNGP) initiatives, NATO`s active involvement in strengthening the Black Sea, ongoing transformation of the Georgian Defence Forces and security environment in the region.
James Appathurai appreciated the implemented defence reforms and in the name of NATO thanked Georgia for its significant contribution to a global peace and security within the framework of the NATO-led peacekeeping mission.
James Appathurai has been NATO`s Special Representative for the South Caucasus and Central Asia since December 2010. In the near future, he will complete this position and will be appointed as Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Increasing Security Challenges.
First Deputy Defence Minister Lela Chikovani, Georgian Ambassador to NATO Viktor Dolidze, Head of the NATO Liaison Office in Georgia Rosaria Puglisi and other officials attended the meeting.
