Today is Independence Day of Georgia. A main event dedicated to the national holiday of the country was held at the Freedom Square. 247 recruits swore the oath of allegiance and from today they have become the members of the Georgian Defence Forces.
In parallel with Tbilisi, the oath taking ceremony was held in 5 locations in different regions of Georgia: in Svaneti - near Ushba and Tetnuldi slopes, in Adjara - near Petra Fortress, in Samtskhe-Javakheti - near Paravani Lake, in Kakheti - Nekresi Monastery Complex and the holy city of Mtskheta. Defence Forces Commander Major General Giorgi Matiashvili reported to the President of Georgia, Supreme Commander in Chief of Defence Forces Salome Zurabishvili.
The commands of the Georgian Defence Forces commands and military schools as well as the U.S. army units were present at the Freedom Square. They greeted the Georgian soldiers who had just completed the Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan and returned to motherland a week ago.
Celebrating the national holiday began by raising Georgia`s State Flag brought in by the military servicemen of Ritual Squadron of National Guard. Nato Metonidze performed the Georgian national anthem with the team of Zakaria Paliashvili Opera and Ballet Theatre, after which they held a minute of silence in memory of the soldiers killed in action for Georgia's independence and territorial integrity, as well as in international missions.
After swearing the oath of allegiance, Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, Chairman of Parliament Kakha Kuchava, Defence Minister Juansher Burchuladze and President of Poland Andrzej Duda who arrived in Georgia just for this day, addressed the audience. This year, the recently enlisted military servicemen met the 26th of May with novelty-for the first time, after swearing the oath of allegiance, they recited the Soldier`s Creed.
At the end of the event, newly modernized Su-25 fighter jets belonging to the Defence Forces flew over Freedom Square and congratulated the citizens on Independence Day by launching the colours of the Georgian flag. The modernized Su-25 fighter jets were overhauled in cooperation with JSC Tam Tbilaviamsheni and Military Scientific -Technical Centre DELTA. The repair of aircrafts were carried out with the involvement and supervision of the Aviation and Air Defence Command of the Ministry of Defence.
Georgian armoured vehicles "Didgori Warrior", "Didgori Medevak" "Didgori 3" produced by Delta were exhibited at the Freedom Square. By the decision of Prime Minister, during his tenure as Defence Minister, the vehicles were distributed in the military units last autumn.
This was the first time that the Defense Forces were equipped with locally produced armored vehicles. Foreign made armored personnel carriers "Humvee", MaxxPro, "Wolf", artillery units - "Dana", the reactive system of salvo fire Lar-160, air-defence vehicle Atlas and armored vehicles were also presented at the Freedom Saquare.
