August 31 is the day of Georgian peacekeepers. The Minister of Defence of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili congratulated the military servicemen participating in the international missions on the Day of Peacekeepers from military command centre. The Minister of Defence and Commander of the Defence Forces, Major General Giorgi Matiashvili were briefed by the Georgian peacekeepers through a video teleconference. They got informed about the situation on the ground from military personnel in Afghanistan and Central African Republics. The Defence Minister thanked the Georgian peacekeepers for their contribution in the process of ensuring global security, wished them a successful mission and a peaceful return to their homeland. Irakli Garibashvili once again expressed his respect for the soldiers killed and wounded during the international missions.
In 1999, the first Georgian peacekeeping platoon left for Kosovo on August 31 to carry out a peacekeeping mission, and on this day, the Day of Peacekeepers at the Ministry of Defence is celebrated.
