Minister of Defence of Georgia hosted his Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Taran who had chosen Georgia for his first official visit abroad. The official welcome ceremony was held at the Ministry of Defence of Georgia followed by a tête-à-tête meeting of Defence Ministers.
Irakli Garibashvili thanked his Ukrainian colleague for supporting sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia and on his side declared that Georgia supports sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Ukraine, as well as peaceful resolution of conflicts. The sides discussed joint strategic goals based on European and Euro-Atlantic integration aspirations of both countries.
Defence Ministers underlined the importance of strategic partnership between Georgia and Ukraine and friendship that counts lots of years. Irakli Garibashvili and Andrii Taran talked about the joint challenges and noted that occupation and annexation of territories of Georgia and Ukraine by the Russian Federation remain as major challenges for both countries endangering regional and international security and stability. Counterparts also talked about such important issues as the Black Sea security, strengthening democratic institutions, increasing defence capabilities and interoperability with NATO.
Irakli Garibashvili and Andrii Taran also discussed bilateral cooperation issues in defence sphere and expressed readiness to continue sharing experience in countering the hybrid threats, defence reforms, cyber security and European and Euro-Atlantic integration. After the bilateral meeting, Defence Ministers of Georgia and the Ukraine signed the Bilateral Cooperation Plan between the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine and the Ministry of Defence of Georgia for year 2020.
