Western Command has a new Chief

From today, the Western Command of the Georgian Defence Forces will be led by Colonel Koba Grigolia. Chief of the Georgian Defence Forces Major General Giorgi Matiashvili presented the new Commander to the Western Command Staff in Khoni. LTC Malkhaz Kalmakhelidze was appointed as Deputy Colonel Koba Grigolia. Prior to that, Colonel Koba Grigolia and Vice-Colonel Malkhaz Kalmakhelidze held the positions of II Brigade and III brigade commanders.

Major General Giorgi Matiashvili thanked the colonels for their hard work on their previous positions of Brigade commanders and wished them every success in their future professional activities. Commander of GDF focused on their professionalism.

Colonel Koba Grigolia has been serving in the Defense Forces since 2000. After receiving the military education at the Unified Military Academy, he began serving in a Military Reconnaissance Unit.  Koba Grigolia has extensive experience in participating in international missions. He took part in international operations in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan. He  received medals for "Combat Merit", "Dedicated to the Motherland", "General Kvinitadze" and "Participation in Peacekeeping Operations", as well as I, II and III rank service medals for impeccable service in the Ministry of Defence.


Vice-Colonel Malkhaz Kalmakhelidze has been serving in the Georgian Defence Forces since 1998. In 2015, he served as Deputy Senior Representative in Afghanistan as part of the Resolute Support Mission there. He received service medals "General Kvinitadze", "General Mazniashvili", "Dedicated to the Motherland", the medal "For Military Courage", for participation in peacekeeping operations and other awards.
