The Supreme Commander-in-Chief, President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili met with the leadership of the Defence Ministry and Joint Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces today. At the meeting that was held in the Defence Ministry President Mikheil Saakashvili was briefed about the current reforms in the defence sphere personally by the Defence Minister. In his report Defence Minister Bacho Akhalaia focused on the training and education system in the Georgian Armed Forces. The President of Georgia expressed interest in participation of the Georgian military servicemen in international operations. Chief of Joint Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces Maj.-Gen. Devi Chankotadze provided detailed information to the Supreme Commander-in-Chief about contribution of the Georgian military contingent to ISAF operation. President Saakashvili said he is very pleased with the recent achievements in defence reformation process. “The concrete combat training has never been so intensive before. We are not occupied with theatrical performances and maneuvers. Daily, purposeful and quiet trainings without any cameras are more effective. This is the most important of all. Today we have leadership - Defence Minister and Chief of Joint Staff who are not engaged in propaganda of themselves. Day and night they are working hard to fulfill their concrete tasks. Our primary goal is to defend our motherland and to further develop our country,” – declared Mikheil Saakashvili.
In the name of the Georgian nation the President thanked the Georgian military: “Each Georgian is thankful and honors those officers, sergeants and soldiers who sacrificed their lives to their motherland. That is the main reason that the Georgian Army is the most prestigious service and outstrips all other institution in all opinion polls. This is very important.”
At the meeting the President of Georgia also talked about the future prospects for development of military education system, establishment of the officers’ corps, importance of participation in international peacekeeping operations and creation of the civil defence system.
Today, the President awarded four employees of the Defence Ministry. Medals of Honor were granted to Captain Giorgi Papunidze, Lieutenant Irakli Buishvili, Corporal Lasha Gogitidze and specialist of the budgetary division Avtandil Roinishvili.
